Tuesday Talk 6/14/22
By Konstantinos on Under recycling, Tuesday Talks
Greetings Hivemind! Our Tuesday talk speaker will not only be one of our neighbors, but a member herself. Cyrina Thomas of Precious Plastic Cincy will be joining us to talk about plastic waste and how we can effectively recycle to create art and industrial products. The mission of Precious Plastics Cincy is to create art that makes people rethink waste. Most people don't know that very few plastics are actually recyclable so most recycling ends up in the landfill. Join us this Tuesday after our weekly meeting to learn more!
Can't make it? Check out their website, Instagram, Facebook page, and LinkedIn.

Hive13 is on Discourse
By Konstantinos on Under discourse, the switchening
Hive13 has used Google Groups for its mailing lists since 2009 - however, on May 17, 2022, these will all be turned to archive-only, and everything migrated to a self-hosted Discourse instance You read that right. Hive13 is making the long await switch from Google Groups (or as we lovingly refer to it as: the mailing list) to Discourse.
Discourse is message forum software. It behaves like most "traditional" forums: people post messages in topics, and replies to a topic form message threads. Users can also configure it to behave like a mailing list.
The ecosystem of products and companies changed considerably since we chose Google Groups in 2009. Google has had Google Groups merely on life-support for many years now. We'd rather move everything now while we have the time to do it at our own pace. Some nice integrations that we had in the past - such as integrating the mailing list with Slack - are now gone because Google removed the support. Here are some of the other reasons: - We've received a regular stream of complaints about Google Groups being very annoying to interact with on phones. - Moving to a self-hosted Discourse instance means that we have full control of our own data. - Because Discourse is quite a nice piece of software, and we have plans of using its integrations with our Wiki, our Slack instance, and possibly our GitHub.
If you are a Hive13 member and would like to participate, we have great migration documentation written in the wiki on how to sign up, as well as Google Groups, and Discourse.
You do not need a discourse account to read the forums. Only to post/reply. More information is also in that wiki page, as well. We think this is a much needed migration, and one that will be better for us as an organization in the long run. If you have any questions, please post them in Slack or on Discourse.
Tuesday Talk 4/12/22
By Konstantinos on Under enameling, Tuesday Talks
Thompson Enamel has been a manufacturer of vitreous enamel for metal for over 119 years. They are the last remaining enamel manufacturer in the United States. Originally headquartered in Chicago, Thompson began producing glass lined pipes in Cincinnati in the 1960’s and since 1984 all of Thompson’s production has been in Newport, KY, right across the river from us!
Join us on April 12th, 2022 at 7:30 for a Tuesday Talk and enameling demonstration from Tom Ellis, a long-time Thompson Enamel employee, editor of the Glass-On-Metal enameling industry magazine, and Enamel artist and instructor. Tom will be speaking about the history of Vitreous Enameling, the Thompson Enamel company, and will be doing some demonstrations of enameling techniques that can be done right here at Hive13 in our Hot Crafts area!
Tuesday Talk Recap (3/8/22)
By Konstantinos on Under Tuesday Talks, 3D Printing, Prop Modeling
Greetings Hivemind! We had another stellar Tuesday Talk with the incredibly skilled Emily of Cosplaycad Props and Accessories. We are so grateful she was able to stream in and talk to us about 3D printing, resin printing, modeling programs so we can go forth and MAKE!
Emily gave us a really in depth presentation on different types of 3D printers, the pros and cons of each type as well. When asked how long it takes her personal setup to print the famous Benchy, she responded about 3 hours due to her modifications to her printers.
Emily is not just versed in 3D printing and 3D modeling, but she is also an accomplished cosplayer and cosplay designer. Part of her presentation included pictures of armor she modeled and designed for her Zelda cosplay and she spoke about the design process. In short, it was a lot of trial and error with major of slight tweaks for wearbility. It's one thing to print something and display it, a whole other world to wear it.
We are so thrilled to have had Emily as a speaker! Please support her on Facebook, Instagram, Github, and Tiktok. Comission her for cosplay props here.
