Brad Walsh will be giving a "hands on" talk to introduce our newest additions to the electronics area; Rigol DS1054Z oscilloscope and a Rigol DG1022 function generator. These new purchases bring us into the modern age. (If the logic analyzer arrives we may even talk about that also).

No charge for this talk, but you get what you pay for. This will just be basic oscilloscope operation and we will examine some simple circuits.

Big and small laser training class

Date: Saturday, March 4th. 12pm class, 4pm class

Class Size Limit: 6 per class
Cost: $0, minus laser minutes
General Description:

This class is designed to train you on how to operate both the small and large laser safely and effectively. I will also show how to use the laser cutting software (Easycut 5.3) and a design program (Inkscape), as well as share some tricks i've learned about them through my experience. After completing this class, you should know how to:
* Activate the ventilation system * Prep the laser * Prep your material * Navigate the software like a champ * Fire the "laser" * How to log your laser minutes Members may bring their own wood material to be used, or they can use scrap materials found in the fablab. Bring in your designs, and I will show how to cut them out.

March 6th, 7pm: Cincinnati Cryptoparty at Hive13

"CryptoParty is a decentralized, global initiative to introduce basic tools for protecting privacy, anonymity and overall security on the Internet to the general public" cryptoparty.in

This is a free, fun, open event for anyone interested discussing, or learning about electronic privacy, rights, and freedom -- regardless of experience or knowledge. There will be free snacks and beverages, examples and learning stations with activities, games, and plenty of people to ask and answer questions.

Planned activities / demos include, basics of VPNs, Tor, Digital Rights, Abandonware, file sharing, and more. An emphasis is placed upon empowering people to control their own identity and level of privacy online.

Anyone who is interested in digital rights and participating in digital citizenship is welcome. Or, just come and enjoy some food, find out what's going on, and maybe see something cool or new.

This event has been organized by UC students currently studying technology, privacy, and society. The cost is covered by UC Forward community collaborative.

Upcoming Class: Making a Wetmolded Leather Mask

In preparation for Mardi Gras or any other event that deserves a mask, we will go over the basics of wetmolding to take a flat piece of leather and turn it into a 3 dimensional leather mask. This is an introduction to a technique of shaping leather to create a hardened shape that is used for not only masks, but cases, holsters, bags, and anything else that should maintain its shape.

No previous experience with leather is needed as we will go over all the cutting and forming.

Description: Hive member Brad Walsh will be doing an introduction to using the mill. Learn what the mill does and how it can be used. A small ($10) donation is requested to cover the cost of materials, which will go home with you (an endmill and a chunk of aluminum to continue to improve your milling skills).

Description: Hive member Brad Walsh will be doing an introduction to using the metal lathe. Learn what it does and how it can be used. Maybe you can even mill threads on a bolt! A small ($5) donation is requested to cover the cost of materials (aluminum piece and carbide insert).

Both Events require basic machine safety gear

•Substantial shoes (no sandals or open toe) Hot metal chips can hurt.

•Long hair pulled back in a ponytail.

•No hand jewelry (rings, watches).

•Eye protection (safety glasses can be provided).

•Prefer no long sleeves, they can be rolled up though.

•Idea is to not have anything to catch on the spinning tool/part and pull you into the process.
