Tuesday, March 8, 2016, 7:30 pm - Disruptive Technology, Consider the Typewriter...

By jim on

Join us at Hive13 this Tuesday, March 8, after our quick 7:30 pm business meeting, when Richard Polt, local Xavier philosophy professor and creator/webmaser for The Classic Typewriter Page website shares his passion for the humble typewriter; noting its birth, evolution, and rebirth, with examples from his extensive collection of machines.

Think disruptive technologies are a just a recent phenom? What hardware did you first use for text editing and word processing way back when? Well, in the 19th century, the must-have, high-tech, new-thing was the typewriter. Appreciate the technology of entrepreneurial makers from over 100 years ago and consider the path that got us to the QWERTY keyboard. Richard's book The Typewriter Revolution shows how old is new and documents how these magical mechanical contraptions are enjoying a surprising second life today.

Members, guests, first-time-walk-ins, and all those interested are welcome to Richard's talk at Hive13 on Tuesday, March 8, after our 7:30pm business meeting. Find Us

Biweekly make-a-thon: 3d Print-a-thon! Saturday, 1/30 2016 Noon-8pm

Want to try your hand at 3D printing? Curious about what this technology is, does? Want to figure out the software? Need some insights from friends and community to get you started? Just want to stare listlessly at the magic of gooey plastic oozing into a creation?

Come on down to this open, free event. This is an informal workshop day where anything goes. If you're interested in 3D printing (or just being a nerd in general), just bring yourself, your brain, and any snacks or accessories you might like.

Lorin will facilitate, but emphasis is on everyone learning from each other (Lorin is a professional educator, which means that he's smart, and good at rhetoric, but not necessarily the font of all wisdom on any topic).

We'll start up the printers and set up some movies in the lounge including the new documentary, “Print The Legend”.

Lorin will bring 2 printers he uses to teach and do workshops with:

Ultimaker 2 (provided by Schoff Foundation, and UCForward, and co-owned by UC, Hive13, and community education partners)
Printrbot simple metal (Lorin's personal teaching machine)
Copy of Simplify3D if you'd like to try Lorin's or use Cura or whatever open source tool you prefer!

Other Hive13 printers / resources based on availability.

Open and free to all. Drop on by. Experts and novices alike! If you're really ambitious, we'll have some new PETG and Nylon filaments from Taulman to try in the Ulltimaker2.

When: Saturday, 1/30 2016 Noon-8pm
Who: Anyone!
Cost: Free!

Optional Donation: 3D printer filament to support further community outreach courses and eNable prosthetic printing, or small monetary donation for purchase of filament (not required).

KiCad Workshop

Have you ever wanted to design your own PCB from scratch? Are you curious about the design process and the tools and techniques used by pros and hackers alike? Maybe you have some experience with Eagle PCB and want to try out a free and open source design suite...

Now's your chance to learn KiCad!

KiCad is an electronics design suite that allows you to create schematics, printed circuit boards, and more with few limitations. It is a completely free and open source suite that runs on Linux, OS X, and Windows.

This workshop will cover the basic workflow of KiCad, but will not cover techniques for creating good electronic circuits. The end goal is for you to be able to start a basic project and know where to go for help if you get stuck.

When: Thursday, January 28th from 7:30pm until about 10pm
Cost: Free (but if you like KiCad consider a donation to CERN!)
What to bring: A laptop with KiCad 4 installed (a mouse is recommended, but not required)

No registration necessary. Please show up at least 10 to 15 minutes early so you can get your computer situated and set up.

Welding classes

By reportingsjr on

Update: sign up links have been added 1/13.

We are excited to announce our first ever set of progressive metal working classes! Whether you have never worked with metal, or have experience building with metal, these classes will teach you all the tips and tricks of creating structures with metal! These courses strike a balance between the practical/theoretical, and safety/fun.

Classes are limited to 5 people per class to insure that everyone has plenty of time to get hands on experience with each tool. Participants of all levels are welcome in each and every class (in fact it is highly recommended if your schedule allows for it). These classes do directly build on each other and as such priority will be given to participants that sign up for both. Warning: The advanced welding class will not focus on welding technique, that will be covered in the "Welding good practice" portion of the first class.

Class pricing and the Schedule is as follows:

Metal Prep and Welding Good Practice (class 1)
Cost: $60
Offered: Friday 1/22/2016 from 6:00PM - 10:00PM
Saturday 1/23/2016 from 6:00PM - 10:00PM
